2011 SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers

Seven of the twelve 2011 SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers have been awarded to five current and former McGill composition students.
The competition is open to all Canadian composers under the age of 32 as of the deadline, and is judged anonymously. This is the second year in a row that seven of the twelve SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers were given to current and former McGill composition students!!!

The young composers are:

Eliot Britton: M.Mus. (2009), PhD (in progress)

            -Studied with Sean Ferguson during M.Mus.

            -Currently studies with Sean Ferguson

Zosha Di Castri: B.Mus. (2008)

            -Studied with Brian Cherney during B.Mus.

Beavan Flanagan: B.Mus. (2010), M.Mus. (in progress)

            -Studied with Jean Lesage and Chris Paul Harman during B.Mus.

            -Currently studies with John Rea

Darren Russo: B.Mus. (2011), M.Mus. (beginning September 2011)

            -Studied with Chris Paul Harman during B.Mus.

Haralabos Stafylakis: B.Mus. (2010)

            -Studied with Chris Paul Harman and Jean Lesage during B.Mus.

 - The award for best overall composition submitted was given (as part of a tie) to a current McGill composition student (Beavan Flanagan).

- Two of the named composers, both former McGill composition students, received two awards each (Zosha Di Castri, Haralabos Stafylakis).

- Three of the competition’s five first prizes were awarded to current McGill composition students (Eliot Britton, Beavan Flanagan and Darren Russo).

- In two of the five categories, all of the awards were given to current and former McGill composition students.

The Serge Garant Awards
 1st Prize: Beavan FlanaganL’Essence perd son sens (for string trio) $3,000 
 2nd Prize: Zosha Di CastriLa Forma dello spazio (for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano) $1,500
 3rd Prize: Haralabos StafylakisCritical Density (quintet for guitar and strings) $750

The Godfrey Ridout Awards
 1st Prize: Darren Russo Missa Syllabis (for large mixed chorus and piano) $3,000
 2nd Prize: Haralabos Stafylakis – Ubi Sunt (for women’s choir, vibraphone, harp and strings) $1,500
 3rd Prize: Zosha di Castri Sulla mappa concava del buio (for soprano, string quartet and tape) $750

The Hugh LeCaine Awards
 1st Prize: Eliot Britton - [steampunk] Lite  (for solo percussion and electronics) $3,000
