I am transcribing a collection of recorded improvisations by Olivier Messiaen and analyzing them in light of the composer's final organ composition, the Livre du Saint Sacrement. I will perform these transcriptions in my doctoral lecture recital, in their original context together with spoken poetry by the composer's mother Cécile Sauvage. The goal of this project is to create a critical edition of the transcriptions and shed new light, through my analysis, on Messiaen's working methods as a composer and improviser.
