This month we have a diverse bunch including jazz, string sonatas and an album just in time for the festive season!
MON AMI, Mon Amour – Matt Haimovitz and Mari Kodama (PENTATONE)
Released November 6, 2020
MON AMI, Mon amour exquisitely melds the vibrant musical palette of Schulich Professor Matt Haimovitz and the graceful insight of pianist Mari Kodama. Cello and piano remain in constant, colorful conversation for rarities by sisters Lili and Nadia Boulanger, in Debussy’s neo-Baroque Sonata, and in the effervescent world of Poulenc’s Cello Sonata. Ravel’s poignant Kaddish and Milhaud’s hopeful Élégie, composed at the end of World War II, round out a program which, even in times of darkness, never loses sight of its joie de vivre. Two Fauré gems are included, the virtuosic Papillon and the breathtaking Après un rêve, with its longing for a mysterious night and an elusive, ecstatic love. The album also marks the 20th anniversary of the Grammy Award-winning OXINGALE RECORDS, launched in 2000 by Prof. Matt Haimovitz and composer Luna Pearl Woolf.
La Capricieuse – Jinjoo Cho (Sony Classical Korea)
Released November 6, 2020
La Capricieuse is Professor JinJoo Cho’s third album. Featuring 13 vibrant and playful pieces performed by Jinjoo on violin with Hyun-Soo Kim on piano. The album of course includes the titular piece La Capricieuse, Op. 17 in E Major by Edward Elgar. When talking about the album Jinjoo said:
“This recording almost feels like the first recording to me in some sense, because it was very hands-on from beginning to end. I was the Executive Producer of the recording and made the call on every single detail of the project. Honestly working on this recording kept me sane during all those days in lockdown. It's my baby, and I'm really happy to share it with everyone finally.”
A very chilly christmas – Chilly Gonzales (Gentle Threat)
Released November 13, 2020
A very chilly christmas is a new festive release from Chilly Gonzales (BMus'94) with feudal oldies to newer holiday pop canon, the album surveys a broad scope of seasonal repertoire and sentiment. There’s grandeur and solemnity, there’s austerity and merriment, an original featuring Feist and covers featuring Jarvis Cocker. And, of course, there’s Mariah Carey. As a whole, the album’s gift is the space it creates for quieter moments amid the flurry and noise of the season.
