Research area: women musicians of the eighteenth century

My research focuses on women performers and composers of eighteenth-century Europe. I am particularly interested in the lives and reception of women violinists and keyboardists of this era and how gendered expectations about women’s musical performance generated different responses to these two groups of instrumentalists. Related to this, my research explores the significance of physical gesture to contemporary understandings of violin and keyboard performance by women.
