“Contrapuntal Process and Imitation in Nicolas Gombert’s Magnificats”

My dissertation will focus on the music of Nicolas Gombert, one of the most prominent composers active in the generation after Josquin des Prez and before Palestrina.  Utilizing computer tools currently being developed in the Single Interface for Score Searching and Analysis (SIMSSA) project, I will analyze the dense imitative language of Gombert’s eight-tone Magnificat cycle. By identifying Gombert’s most common contrapuntal and imitative processes, I will provide musicologists with new ways of approaching the music of the mid-16th century.
