The Eleanor Stubley Recording Prize was established by late Professor Eleanor Stubley in 2016 to facilitate excellence and innovation in musical performance and creation. It is awarded by a committee established by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in Music to an outstanding graduate student in a performance, composition or conducting program at the Schulich School of Music for a transformative recording project.
Applicants must form a team with a student in a Sound Recording program at McGill.

Application process
Submit a detailed proposal to the Music Graduate Studies Office (graduatestudies.music [at] mcgill.ca) by Friday, February 9, 2024
The application should include:
- A description of the artistic theme or vision of the recording, with reference to specific repertoire, performance forces required, and the recording process.
- An updated CV for both the performer or composer and the Sound Recording student.
- A 3–5-minute recording of the applicant performing or conducting, or of a work by a composition applicant.
- A plan and schedule for the recording.
- Two letters of reference, one for the performer or composer, and one for the sound recording student.
Amount and disbursement of funds
- The winner receives $3,250 to cover project expenses.
- Only one prize will be awarded.
- Use of spaces (concert halls, recording studios, etc. in the Schulich School of Music) will be free, pending availability. The complexity of some projects (e.g., large ensemble, technical requirements) may require the project funds to cover the cost of a stage manager.
- The prize will be announced in the end of February.
- A copy of the resulting recording should be submitted to the Music Graduate Studies Office before May 31, 2024.
Eligibility
The competition is open to outstanding full-time registered graduate students in a performance, composition or conducting program at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University. Applicants must form a team with a full-time registered student in a Sound Recording program at McGill. If the project is initiated by a Sound Recording student, the performers on the project must be full-time registered McGill graduate students at the Schulich School of Music. Students can only be awarded the prize once during their studies at the Schulich School of Music.
Selection criteria
Applications will be assessed on:
- Originality and artistic vision of the suggested project. Note that originality of repertoire is evaluated as well.
- The applicant's performance, composition, or recording achievements.
- The potential of the team to achieve the proposed program at a high level.
Adjudication committee
- The Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in Music and two to three faculty members, including a member from the Sound Recording Area.
