About Stroke

A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood vessels in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke), which can cause brain cells in the affected area to die. The effects of a stroke depend on where the brain was injured, as well as how much damage occurred. It is crucial for patients suffering a stroke to get treatment in the shortest delay possible.

Every ten minutes, someone in Canada suffers a stroke. Strokes kill 14,000 Canadians each year, making stroke the third leading cause of death in this country.

The Neuro’s Stroke Unit: Access to Cutting-Edge Treatment

The Neuro is one of two stroke centres in Montreal and provides highly-specialized and rapid assessment, diagnostics and treatment for hyper-acute stroke, which is a stroke that has occurred within 10 - 12 hours before the patient’s arrival at the centre.

Patients arriving by ambulance with stroke symptoms receive immediate attention. Within 15 to 30 minutes of a patient’s arrival, a neurological examination, CT scans and other tests are performed to confirm the diagnosis and determine a rapid course of treatment.

The Neuro has specialists on-site 24 hours a day, an Intensive Care Unit, an interventional neuroradiologist, neurosurgeons and beds dedicated to stroke patients.
