Craniomaxillofacial Trauma

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of both adult and pediatric facial trauma victims at the MUHC. The Montreal General Hospital is one of three tertiary trauma centres in Quebec and the only one in located in downtown Montreal. Over 10,000 trauma victims are managed annually at the Montreal General Hospital.

With unique training in dentistry, medicine and surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have an intricate knowledge of the hard and soft tissues of the craniomaxillofacial region making them ideally suited for tending to patients with trauma to this region of the body. The OMFS service works closely with the trauma team, intensive care unit, and other affiliated services in the management of patients with blunt and penetrating trauma of the head and neck region. Often these patients require complex reconstruction of different structures including the cranium, naso-orbito-ethmoid (NOE) complex, orbit, zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC), nose, maxilla, mandible, and soft tissues of the head and neck.
