Please read this message from the Provost regarding university sponsored travel outside of Canada

Pre-Travel Checklist

All McGill members – students, faculty and staff – are required to make emergency provisions before leaving on university sponsored travel, including, but not limited to:

1. Ensuring appropriate travel health insurance coverage:

2. Registering trip itinerary with McGill:

3. Provide a detailed travel itinerary and updates to the Traveler’s supervisor

4. Registering with their Embassy. This allows consular officials to send travelers important information in case of an emergency abroad:

5. The Government of Canada Travel Advisories:

  • If these travel warnings are in effect: “avoid non-essential travel or avoid all travel”, the Traveler is required to consult with Human Resources to assess impact on the Traveler’s emergency medical insurance coverage as well as to consult with their Facutly/Department to assess if the trip is still allowed.

6. Download the Government of Canada Travel Smart web app for easy access to valuable information

7. Ensure that all travel documents including passport, visa and immunizations are up-to-date

  • Make sure to check the entry and exit requirements for a country every time before you travel as these are regularly updated.  Visit www.travel.gc.ca for travel advice for Canadian citizens. 

8. Gather all of your health insurance information in case of a medical emergency while away

  • Record contact numbers and health insurance policy information
  • Inform yourself about procedures to follow when seeking medical attention abroad
  • Print or download your Manulife Healthcare Card - you can find your card on the Manulife Plan Member Secure Site. Sign in, navigate to "Quick Links" and choose "Benefits Card"
  • Review your destination’s specific health and security information on the Government of Canada travel advisory site, as well as listings of the government's emergency services for citizens

9. Students traveling abroad on a University-approved activity must also attend Pre-departure Orientation
