2017 Juno Nominees Announced
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced the nominees for the 46th Annual JUNO Awards and this year Schulich faculty, alumni and former faculty are well-represented in the lists of finalists. Here below is a comprehensive list of those nominees with ties to the school.
Opus Prize winners announced
The 20th annual Conseil Québecois de la musique Gala was held on Sunday, February 5th, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Under the artistic direction of Alain Gauthier, Québec's musical community gathered to celebrate the artists, performers, musical ensembles, cultural organizations, composers and musicologists who have shone across the province and beyond over the past year. Once again, there were many awards distributed to members of the Schulich community.
Sam Newsome: ‘Some things just are’

On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, saxophonist Sam Newsome will be performing with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, McGill Jazz Orchestra I and other guests at 7:30 p.m. in Pollack Hall. In anticipation of this concert, Schulich graduate student Chris Maskell spoke to Newsome to learn more about his life and music.

Schulich Brass named to semi-finals in the National Trumpet Competition
The McGill Trumpet Ensemble, let by Professor Richard Stoelzel, has advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition to be held in March 2017 in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Francis LaPorte and Brent Proseus have advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division.
Rashaan Allwood Prizewinner in the Wadden International Organ Competition
Rashaan Allwood, a student of Professor Hans-Ola Ericsson, was awarded second prize at the Wadden International Organ Competition in Denmark this past weekend. HIs award of 75.000 Danish Krona is approximately $14,000 Canadian. “I am indeed very proud of Rashaan whose shows exceptional hard work,talent, and determination," said Prof.

Riffing on a Legend: Jazz Concert Inspired by Martin Luther King Junior
Jazz musicians paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert based on his speeches and words. The concert at McGill University used speeches by the civil rights leader as an auditory backdrop to the instrumental pieces.

Schulich School of Music and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra Academy
The Schulich School of Music at McGill University is now one of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra Academy’s collaborating organizations, joining founding participants The Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music.
Pianist Madeline Weber receives Abner Martin Music Scholarship
Madeline Weber, student of Professor Marina Mdivani is the recipient of the $4,000 Abner Martin Music Scholarship for 2016/17.
Zi Hua Tan finalist for the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award
Zi Hua Tan, a Doctoral composition student of Prof. John Rea has been named a finalist for the 2017 Toru Takemitsu Composition Award. Out of 115 entries from 36 countries, Zi Hua Tan’s composition, …at the still point… was chosen to be among the four finalists of the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2017.
Schulich nominees for the Prix Opus
Finalists for the Conseil québécois de la musique's Prix Opus were announced last Friday, and once again there are many nominated who are Schulich alumni and/or faculty. The Prix Opus were established in 1996 to highlight the excellence and diversity of Québec's musical offering, and are awarded in many different categories. The winners will be announced in a Gala event to be held on Sunday, February 5, 2017.
