A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is required to work in Canada. Some banking institutions also require a SIN to open an account. Staff members are advised to obtain a SIN for themselves and all family members. Canadian citizens
You must provide an original of one of the following:
- Certificate of birth or birth certificate;
- Certificate of Canadian Citizenship;
- Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad
Permanent residents
You must provide an original of one of the following:
- Permanent resident card
- Confirmation of Permanent Residence
- Record of Landing
- Verification of Landing
- Status Verification or Verification of Status
Temporary residents
You must provide an original of one of the following:
- Work permit
- Study permit
- Visitor record
- Diplomatic identity card and a work authorization
Staff members on a Temporary Work Permit must renew their SIN following receipt of a new Temporary Work Permit.
