Graduate/Postdoctoral Research Trainees and Postdoctoral Fellows

As a research based institution, McGill encourages professors to work and collaborate with scholars around the globe to facilitate collaboration, the University has established programs through which professors can attract and supervise potential colleagues to assist them in their respective research projects.

There are generally three categories of Research Trainees/Fellows at McGill:

  • Graduate Research Trainee

  • Postdoctoral Research Trainee

  • Postdoctoral Fellow

How to become a Research Trainee/Fellow at McGill?

1. A McGill faculty member must accept to host the candidate for a specific project and/or research for a set period of time (the length of stay can vary depending on the category).

2. The faculty member must obtain approval from the Chair of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education.

3. It is highly recommended that the candidate provides the faculty member with the following documents at least six (6) to eight (8) months prior to the anticipated start date. All documents must be in English or French.

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Proof of funding (where applicable)

4. The faculty member will set up the candidate with contact information for our Admin Student Affairs Coordinator, Michael Lariviere.

5. The Administrative Student Affairs Coordinator, Michael Lariviere will advise and guide the candidate on the process.

To ensure a smooth and timely application process, the faculty member and candidate must adhere to the five steps outlined above. If either does not, delays and/or failure to accept the candidate may occur.
