Thinking Narratively About Research

One challenge facing academic writers is the need to shape research into compelling stories that will engage an audience. In this workshop you will learn to conceptualize your research as story by becoming familiar with some craft elements from the field of creative writing. While academic writing and creative writing may seem like unrelated genres, the tools used by creative writers to shape their stories can help academic writers learn to do the same.

During the session, attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Understand the craft elements of narrative structure and character;
  • Learn how narrative structure and character help propel story;
  • Consider how narrative structure and character underpin academic work;
  • Conceptualize their own research in terms of narrative structure and character, both at the story level and at the sentence level.

This workshop is best suited to graduate students who have a clear research project already in progress. To make the workshop as productive as possible, please bring a brief sample of some research writing you are working on and a short list of your key words and concepts.

The workshop will be offered online on Friday, May 27, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. This workshop will be led by Sarah Wolfson, a Course Lecturer at the McGill Writing Centre who has fifteen years of experience teaching composition, academic writing, and creative writing.

The workshop will be offered online via Zoom. You will receive the zoom link and other details in the confirmation email once you submit the form.
