Sound Scholarship: Correctly Using Sources & Maintaining Academic Integrity

Plagiarism is a major violation of academic integrity that has serious consequences. While you probably know that intentionally copying others’ work without acknowledging the information source is plagiarism, did you know that plagiarism can also occur inadvertently? Knowing how to correctly use sources, how to paraphrase and summarize source material, is as important as knowing how to correctly cite sources.

In this workshop, we will 1) identify different types of plagiarism; 2) distinguish between using primary and secondary sources; 3) address how to use different citation patterns; and 4) discuss summary and paraphrase strategies essential to avoiding inadvertent plagiarism

Come prepare to interact with your peers through interactive activities, including: 1) differentiating between sources that constitute plagiarism and other that are appropriate; 2) identifying a good summary; and 3) paraphrasing and summarizing a short passage using some guiding questions.

The workshop will be offered online on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.  This workshop will be led by Mary Towers, a PhD candidate in English, who teaches writing to undergraduates and graduate students at the McGill Writing Centre.

The workshop will be offered online via Zoom. You will receive the zoom link and other details in the confirmation email once you submit the form.
