Men’s Mental Health: Promoting Well-being, Resilience and Action (Online)

Thursday, October 24, 2024 13:15to14:00

Offered by the Health and Wellness Program as part of the 14th Annual Health and Wellness Fair

Male mental health is a critical yet often underrecognized area, with men making up a significant portion of global suicide rates—approximately 7 out of every 10 suicide deaths. In Canada, suicide is the second leading cause of death among men under 50, with men accounting for about 75% of these tragedies. Despite these statistics, the issue is frequently termed a “silent crisis” or “silent epidemic.” However, there is hope: effective psychological treatments for depression, a major risk factor for suicide, are available and can make a profound difference. This presentation will explore the role of depression in male suicide, examine the barriers that prevent men from seeking help, and introduce an innovative mental health resource tailored specifically for men. By fostering awareness, encouraging help-seeking behavior, and promoting resilience, we can work together to improve men’s mental health and reduce suicide rates.
