Utility

Research and clinical settings

The instrument captures the basic symptoms that are subtle, subclinical, and phenomenologically clearly distinct from (attenuated) psychotic symptoms. These symptoms can be experienced before the first episode psychosis, between and after episodes, or during the psychotic episodes.

Two versions exist:

  • A version for adults: SPI-A
  • A version for children and adolescents: SPI-CY

With this instrument symptoms can be assessed as early as the age of 8, however, some basic symptoms require a higher cognitive-developmental state and thus should not be assessed before the age of 13. The SPI-CY offers the possibility of incorporating information from parents or caregivers. While such third-party information may support a better assessment of the child/adolescent, it should not replace child/adolescent.
