Academic matters

1. Faculty council

Faculty members all sit on Faculty Council. Agendas, minutes and invites are on the myCourses platform. For more information, contact dean.law [at] mcgill.ca.

2. Academic laptop program

The Academic Laptop Program assists tenured and tenure-stream academic staff by subsidizing part or all the costs of purchasing laptop computers to be used for teaching purposes.

3. Professional development fund

As per the 2019-2020 Academic Salary Policy, each eligible academic staff member is allowed up to $750 annually for Professional Development purposes. Eligible staff who do not use the full $750 in a given fiscal year may carry forward all, or any unused amount derived over two consecutive years, for a cumulative maximum of $1500.

4. Academic reappointments

Reappointments shall be for a definite term of up to three years. It is practice to grant three-year reappointments to candidates who are on track for tenure and one- or two-year reappointments to candidates whose performance of their academic duties is of concern. 5. Academic promotions

  • Promotion of Tenure-Track Professors and Librarians
    The Statutory Selection Committee (SSC) considers the Promotion dossier either after review and positive recommendation by the candidate's home department(s) and Faculty, or after the process is initiated by the candidate under the process initiated by the candidate after 10 years. The University Secretariat oversees promotion dossiers and further information is available from their Information on Promotion website.
  • Tenure Consideration
    Tenure consideration for tenure-track professors and librarians is mandatory at a certain point in their McGill careers. Academic staff members may put forth a dossier for early consideration, if advisable.

7. Sabbatic leaves

Sabbaticals give tenured academic staff temporary teaching release to devote their full time and attention to research and scholarly initiatives. The Sabbatic leaves web page describes the deadlines and procedures to apply.
