New Student Checklist



These checklists are mandatory reading for all new students – they'll help you get off on the right foot and make sure you meet all your important deadlines. If you're coming to McGill from a Quebec CEGEP, consult the checklist below. Otherwise, click on the "Admitted from High School" tab for your Year 0 checklist.

Compulsory Orientation Session

 

Discover McGill

For all students, including special, visiting, and exchange students (all day)

Discover McGill is a campus-wide welcome day that you can't miss! It's a chance to learn about McGill's resources for academic and personal success, Student Services, and the Students' Society of McGill University.

Date: August 28th, 2018

This is a full-day event that starts at 9:00 a.m. Molson Stadium Athletics Complex, 475 Pine Avenue West.


McGill RACE Day: Registration and Advising for CEGEP Entrants

Date: Monday, June 11, 2018
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Location: McConnell Engineering, Room 204

All newly admitted CEGEP students are invited to the McGill Engineering Student Centre (MESC) to:

  • meet a Departmental/School representative
  • discuss course selection
  • register for courses in one of our computer labs
  • tour the Engineering Complex
  • pick up McGill ID cards

Transfer Credit Session - Year 0 (Freshman)

McGill University will automatically grant you transfer credit for which you are eligible. These transfer credits will be reflected on your McGill transcript. If you do not see your transfer credits reflected on your McGill transcript, please attend the Transfer Credit Session:

Student Registration System


If you are unable to register for the recommended courses, please newstudentadvising.engineering [at] mcgill.ca (contact us)Class schedule conflicts are not permitted (i.e. courses held at the same time).

ID Cards

ID Cards – Obtain your student identification (ID) card at Service Point,  3415 McTavish Street, McLennan Library Building. First, you must register for at least one course and wait 24 hours following registration.

McGill Email Address

Moving forward, the McGill Engineering Student Centre will only send official communication to your McGill email address. select “McGill Email”. If you are having issues, please contact 514-398-3398.

Key Dates for Fall 2018 Semester

  1. September 4, 2018 Classes begin
  2. September 18, 2018 Deadline to Course Change (add/drop)
  3. September 25, 2018 Deadline for Course Withdrawal (with refund)
  4. October 30, 2018 Deadline for withdrawal with NO fee refund

Important Dates

Registration Opens: 

June 8, 2018: For CEGEP Scholarship recipients
June 11, 2018: ALL Newly admitted CEGEP students may begin course registration via MINERVA! (Instructions above)

Take advantage of this early start to ensure that you secure a space in your courses.

Note: In order to avoid any late registration penalties you must be registered in at least one course by August 14, 2018.

Important Session Dates

Mandatory Departmental/School Advising Sessions

1. June 7, 2018: CSI (CEGEP Student Information Session)
2. June 11, 2018: RACE Day (Registration and Advising CEGEP Entrants)         
3. Attend the mandatory Departmental/School Advising Sessions to meet the Chair/ Director of your department/school; discuss your course registration and meet your fellow students.     


Important Notice – Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 212, 234) - Fall 2018

New students who have completed CEGEP  level  courses in Organic I and/or II and who are entering the Department of Chemical Engineering in Fall 2018,  or who intend to complete the Minor program in Biomedical Engineering will now have two options available to satisfy these program requirements.

Option 1

You may write a McGill Placement Examination in Organic Chemistry I and II (CHEM 212, CHEM 222 (234) at McGill University in August 2018.  Should you register to take one or both of these McGill Placement Examinations,  and successfully achieve a passing grade  in said course(s)  you will

  • be granted  full transfer credit on the basis of this examination(s) 
  • have the transfer credit reflected on your McGill transcript; 
  • have your program credit requirements decreased to reflect these transfer credits.

Option 2

You must register for CHEM 212 Organic I (Fall 2018)  and CHEM 234  Organic II (Winter 2019) during your studies at McGill  as outlined in your program requirements.

Review McGill Placement Examinations for application procedures and details related to the time, place and location of the exams.

June 18, 2018French Baccalaureates, Int’l Baccalaureates, Advanced Level and Advanced Subsidiary
June 20, 2018: All newly admitted High School students

Note: In order to avoid any late registration penalties you must be registered in at least one course by August 14, 2018.

It is recommended to REGISTER IMMEDIATELY in order to get your preferred schedule for the Fall and Winter term.


Compulsory Information / Registration / Orientation Sessions


Transfer Credits

  • McGill University will automatically grant you transfer credit for which you are eligible.  These transfer credits will be reflected on your McGill transcript on an ongoing basis.
  • If you do not see your transfer credits reflected on your McGill transcript by August 26th you are obliged to attend the Transfer Credit Session on Monday August 27th 2018 at 2pm  to have your documents evaluated.

Note:  You are not be permitted to retake a course in which transfer credits have been granted.

Note:  Students entering a 123-151 (Year 0) credit program may write McGill Science Placement Examinations

Where transfer credits  have been granted, the following selection of courses/curriculum will help  you build your course schedule for each term: A Department/School Advisor will assist you with alternate course selection to complete your schedule during the Advising Session in August.
