Regulations and Application

Regulation on the use of 3D printers

Accessibility

The Research Commons 3D printers are available for use by all members of the McGill community, including current students, staff, faculty members, and researchers. A valid McGill ID card may be required as proof of one’s status at McGill.

To use the Library’s 3D printers you must complete the form linked below acknowledging that you have read these regulations as well as McGill’s Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures.

Those who desire to use the printers must also consult with one the Library’s 3D Printing Assistants to confirm that they have been trained in the responsible use of this technology.

Users can initiate print jobs when our Student Assistants are present during the following times: Tuesday 9 am - 5 pm; Thursday 9 am - 5pm; and Friday 9 am - 2pm. Outside of Student Assistant hours the space will be unlocked by Schulich staff so that registered users can collect print jobs. Users must be present in the 3D Printing Lab for the first 10 minutes of their print job - print jobs must not be launched remotely.

To use a 3D printer you must first reserve one via the Library’s Booking System. Print jobs initiated without a corresponding reservation in the Library’s Booking System will be cancelled, and the user could have privileges revoked. Users who repeatedly fail to show up for a booking may have privileges revoked. Users who repeatedly book printers for significantly longer periods than the duration of their print jobs may have privileges revoked (it is not allowed to block off a printer for an entire day when you only intend to commence your print at the end of the day).

Users can book a printer for a maximum of 15 hours at a time, and up to 20 hours per week. Users may not create concurrent bookings on multiple printers. Special requests for concurrent or longer prints may be accommodated in rare cases - please contact graeme.langdon [at] mcgill.ca to discuss this. Users who exceed these limits without express permission could have privileges revoked.

Lawful and ethical use

The 3D printers may only be used for lawful and non-commercial purposes and in compliance with all McGill policies and regulations. It is prohibited to 3D print any objects or material components in violation of local, provincial, or federal laws, or in violation of any third party’s intellectual property or proprietary rights. Users may not print obscene, unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or otherwise inappropriate objects or components. Users who violate this regulation will have privileges revoked.

Risk mitigation

Users are required to follow these regulations as well as the manufacturers’ safety instructions when operating the equipment.

Quality of printed output

The McGill Library is not responsible for the quality, durability, or functionality of printed material. The quality, durability, and functionality of a printed object or component are the sole responsibility of the individual submitting the design. The McGill Library is not responsible for lost or stolen print jobs.
