Early Music; B.Mus. (Minor)

Program Overview

The Minor in Early Music Performance offers an opportunity for B.Mus. students to learn the elements of early music performance practice, and to play an early music instrument or to sing early music.

Enrollment

This minor program is open to B.Mus. students, with the exception of students in the B.Mus. Early Music Performance program. To be considered for admission, you must audition and have completed the B.Mus. Performance 1 exam or the B.Mus. Concentration final exam. Enrollment is limited.

Audition

Audition Material

For all instruments (except voice)

  • Prepare approximately 20 minutes of repertoire.
    From the baroque period (approximately 1600-1750), include:
    • at least two movements, including a prelude, from a suite by a French composer.
    • an unaccompanied work (transcriptions of material originally written for another instrument are accepted);
    • at least two movements (slow and fast) from a sonata by a German or Italian composer;
  • You may be asked to sight-read.
     

For Voice

  • Prepare three contrasting songs or arias to be performed from memory and representing at least two languages.
  • Select the first piece to be performed. Subsequent choices may be made by the panel.
  • Provide four typed copies of your repertoire list for the audition panel. Copies of the music for the panel are not required.

Application Deadline: March 1. Late applications will be accepted at the discretion of the department.
